Strengthening Leadership, Civic Engagement, and Community Resilience
Over the past several months, WAGAP had the opportunity to collaborate with Front & Centered through the Just Transition Leadership Program. This partnership created meaningful opportunities for our Community Education and Engagement Coordinator, Chris Cazares, to support different sectors of our community through civic engagement initiatives, environmental education, and youth leadership development.
Throughout this collaboration, several impactful projects were carried out that helped strengthen community awareness and civic participation. Through this partnership, we had the opportunity to participate in Front & Centered’s Advocacy Day in Olympia, where we joined colleagues from organizations across the state to advocate for Energy Assistance Bill 1903. Another important opportunity emerged through a collaboration with Columbia Riverkeeper and Columbia High School’s Raíces Club to raise awareness among youth and families in our community about the health of the Columbia River and the use of the IVAN environmental reporting system. Through educational activities and meaningful discussions, participants gained a deeper understanding of environmental stewardship and the importance of protecting natural resources for future generations.
One of the most significant projects during our collaboration with Front & Centered was a student-led initiative from the Lyle School District. Students had the opportunity to learn directly from experts at the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) about wildfire prevention and strategies for protecting properties and communities from wildfire risks.
Throughout the project, students participated in wildfire preparedness orientations, took notes, conducted research, and worked together to develop their own presentation. Their efforts ultimately led to the creation of an educational video designed to continue the conversation around wildfire preparedness as we approach another wildfire season.
The video will be shared with local organizations, community partners, residents, and at community events to raise awareness about proactive measures individuals and families can take to prepare for potential wildfires. The goal is not only to provide information but also to encourage action and preparedness throughout the region.
As the wildfire project came to a close, one question consistently emerged: “What’s next?” That question reflects a growing interest within our communities to engage, learn, and contribute. We have already seen interest from additional communities that would like to participate in similar experiences, demonstrating the positive impact these opportunities can have on young people.
“What made this project especially meaningful was witnessing the growth of the students involved. During the early stages of the project, many of them were shy and hesitant. However, as the months progressed, their confidence increased, their participation grew, and so did their interest in becoming involved in more opportunities like this” - Chris Cazares.

Monarca Project: Wildfires (Incendios)
Fortaleciendo el Liderazgo, la Participación Cívica y la Resiliencia Comunitaria
Durante los últimos meses, WAGAP tuvo la oportunidad de colaborar con Front & Centered a través del Programa de Liderazgo para una Transición Justa (Just Transition Leadership Program). Esta alianza creó oportunidades significativas para que nuestro Coordinador de Educación y Participación Comunitaria, Chris Cazares, apoyara a diferentes sectores de nuestra comunidad mediante iniciativas de participación cívica, educación ambiental y desarrollo de liderazgo juvenil.
A lo largo de esta colaboración, se llevaron a cabo varios proyectos de gran impacto que ayudaron a fortalecer la conciencia comunitaria y la participación cívica. Gracias a esta alianza, tuvimos la oportunidad de participar en el Día de Incidencia Legislativa (Advocacy Day) de Front & Centered en Olympia, donde nos unimos a colegas de organizaciones de todo el estado para abogar por la Ley de Asistencia Energética 1903. Otra importante oportunidad surgió a través de una colaboración con Columbia Riverkeeper y el Club Raíces de Columbia High School para crear conciencia entre los jóvenes y las familias de nuestra comunidad sobre la salud del río Columbia y el uso del sistema de reporte ambiental IVAN. Mediante actividades educativas y conversaciones significativas, los participantes obtuvieron una comprensión más profunda de la responsabilidad ambiental y de la importancia de proteger los recursos naturales para las futuras generaciones.
Uno de los proyectos más significativos durante nuestra colaboración con Front & Centered fue una iniciativa liderada por estudiantes del Distrito Escolar de Lyle. Los estudiantes tuvieron la oportunidad de aprender directamente de expertos del Departamento de Recursos Naturales (DNR) sobre la prevención de incendios forestales y las estrategias para proteger propiedades y comunidades de los riesgos asociados con estos incendios.
A lo largo del proyecto, los estudiantes participaron en orientaciones sobre preparación ante incendios forestales, tomaron notas, realizaron investigaciones y trabajaron en equipo para desarrollar su propia presentación. Sus esfuerzos culminaron en la creación de un video educativo diseñado para continuar la conversación sobre la preparación ante incendios forestales mientras nos acercamos a una nueva temporada de incendios.
El video será compartido con organizaciones locales, socios comunitarios, residentes y durante eventos comunitarios para crear conciencia sobre las medidas proactivas que las personas y las familias pueden tomar para prepararse ante posibles incendios forestales. El objetivo no es solo brindar información, sino también fomentar la acción y la preparación en toda la región.
A medida que el proyecto sobre incendios forestales llegaba a su fin, una pregunta surgía constantemente: “¿Qué sigue?”. Esta pregunta refleja un interés creciente dentro de nuestras comunidades por participar, aprender y contribuir. Ya hemos observado interés de otras comunidades que desean participar en experiencias similares, lo que demuestra el impacto positivo que estas oportunidades pueden tener en los jóvenes.
"Lo que hizo que este proyecto fuera especialmente significativo fue ser testigo del crecimiento de los estudiantes involucrados. Durante las primeras etapas del proyecto, muchos de ellos eran tímidos y mostraban cierta inseguridad. Sin embargo, a medida que avanzaron los meses, su confianza aumentó, su participación creció y también su interés en involucrarse en más oportunidades como esta." — Chris Cazares.
